You can deposit or (withdraw) funds or value to your Liberty Reserve account by using any number of independent exchange providers listed on the Liberty Reserve website. Usually, exchange providers will have an account number starting with the letter, "U".in the past they used the letter "X" instead "U"...so the letter "u"used as mark for the liberty reserve 's accounts....in another meaning they build their database to store the accounts that start with "U" for fast searching and dedicating of the wrong accounts .also it can be for security issues or trading issues...........

I think the letter "U" functions as a special identity of Liberty Reserve. Well...that's my opinion.

I googled up this question posted by thread starter and here are my findings
http://www.moneymakergroup.com/Liber...1#entry6007731
My guess is that LR simply randomly chose 2 letters, and in this case it randomly chosen 'U' for users and others and 'X' for exchanger

a fun question but important too, beside it for distinguish between exchanger account and regular account, but i think you should see our ecurrency type , there are exist 3 currency type it is USD, EUR and Gold. U is for USD
E is for EUR
G is for Gold
because not only liberty reserve but perfectmoney also, CMIIW

Anyway Liberty Reserve is widely supported by all kinds of sites and as of know they are doing a quiet good work with all HYIP s ,PTP forums and here the fees are also very low ,even for big amounts it will charge only 2.99$ and also the main demerit is that the transactions are irreversible .
